ACTIVE RECRUITMENT

Senior Policy Analyst

ICP seeks ambitious, experienced, and quantitative researchers to work with a multi-disciplinary team of analysts on policy issues affecting poor and homeless children and their families. The Senior Policy Analyst will be responsible for collecting, evaluating, and analyzing data, including conducting statistical analysis, related to the connections between child poverty or homelessness and social policies. The researcher will be required to write and prepare research reports, fact sheets, and policy briefs to communicate outcomes to influence public policy in New York City, New York State, and the United States. The Senior Policy Analyst will also formulate research questions and oversee projects conducted by junior staff and advise management on the methods, analysis, and outcomes of the research.  

Qualifications and Expectations

  • Master’s degree in the social sciences, humanities, or public affairs preferably in economics, political science, sociology, public policy, urban studies, history, or geography.
  • Minimum of three years work experience in the quantitative research of public policies.
  • Minimum of one year of work experience with the hands-on supervision of research staff.
  • Excellent writing and communication skills, with the demonstrated ability to synthesize and communicate complex issues.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaborate across disciplines, demonstrating both initiative and accountability.
  • Familiarity with poverty and homelessness research and relevant data sets, including U.S. Census data.
  • Familiarity with federal financing mechanisms, and state and county budget data.
  • Proficiency in statistical software such as SPSS, STATA, SAS, MATLAB, S-PLUS, or R.
  • Experience with databases and software such as Microsoft Access or SQL is a plus.
  • GIS experience is a plus.
  • Fluent with Microsoft Office programs; Mac experience preferred.
  • Willingness to work in a dynamic environment.

Deputy Director

ICP seeks Deputy Director responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of a social policy research organization, specializing in child poverty and family homelessness issues.  Candidate must be well versed in policy research and research methods and have excellent writing and verbal skills. 

Qualifications and Expectations

  • Master's degree or higher in social sciences
  • Minimum of six years management experience
  • Extensive knowledge of policy research and research methods.
  • Experience with the quantitative analysis of public policies as well as collecting, analyzing, and using data
  • SPSS experience required
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to synthesize and communicate complex issues to a variety of audiences
  • Experience with homeless population a plus.

GIS Analyst

ICP is seeking an ambitious and experienced GIS Analyst for an on-going project – the National Survey of Programs and Services for Homeless Families. The project is an online resource that tracks homeless demographics and investigates governmental, non-profit, and voluntary sector work on homeless family issues at state and local levels.

The GIS Analyst will be responsible for conducting research, analyzing geographic data, and creating maps on policy issues affecting poor and homeless children and their families across the United States. The analyst will be required to extract, compile, and merge data from various sources and process very large data sets to create interesting and interactive maps. The analyst will also be responsible for conducting simple statistical analysis and writing and preparing research reports, fact sheets, and policy briefs. 

Qualifications and Expectations

  • Bachelor's degree in the social sciences, preferably geography.
  • Minimum of three years work experience with GIS, preferably ArcGIS.
  • Knowledge of basic cartography.
  • Proficiency with databases and related software such as Microsoft Access or SQL.
  • Experience with Adobe Illustrator and Flash.
  • Knowledge of basic statistics and experience with software such as SPSS, STATA, SAS, MATLAB, S-PLUS, or R.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, with the demonstrated ability to synthesize and communicate complex issues.

Policy Analyst

ICP seeks ambitious entry-level researchers to work with a multi-disciplinary team of analysts on policy issues affecting poor and homeless children and their families.The Policy Analyst will be primarily responsible for conducting research and analyzing data, including simple statistical analysis, related to the connections between child poverty or homelessness and social policies. The analyst will be required to write and prepare research reports, fact sheets, and policy briefs to communicate outcomes to influence public policy in New York City, New York State, and the United States.

Additional duties may include primary data collection through surveys and Internet research, direct outreach to gather information from service providers and government organizations across the country, and some editing and data entry.

Researchers will be responsible for conducting statistical analysis and writing policy reports related to the experiences of disadvantaged children and families.  The preferred candidate will also be responsible for aiding in the development of research projects related to the connections between child poverty or homelessness and social policies. The researcher will be required to write and prepare research reports, fact sheets, and policy briefs to communicate outcomes to influence public policy in New York City, New York State, and the United States.

Qualifications and Expectations

  • BA or Master's degree in the social sciences, humanities or journalism (recent graduates preferred)
  • Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Interest in and knowledge of policies related to the well-being of poor children and families
  • Ability to carry out simple statistical analyses and interpret results
  • Strong critical thinking and analytical skills
  • Ability to work on multiple projects concurrently, both self-directed and independently, as well as part of a team

Policy Analyst – National Survey

Duties will include data collection through surveys and Internet research, direct outreach to gather information from service providers and government organizations across the country, and the synthesis of information into concise, coherent pieces for publication.  Some editing and data entry will also be required.

Senior Research Associate

The Institute for Children and Poverty (ICP) is seeking an enthusiastic, quantitative, analytical social scientist to conduct applied research across a range of policy issues relevant to low-income and disadvantaged children and families. The preferred candidate should possess a background and interest in policy research, ability to perform statistical analysis, and experience working collaboratively.

The Senior Research Associate will be responsible for conducting statistical analysis and writing research reports that are relevant to policies and programs that impact poor families and children.  The preferred candidate will also be responsible for aiding in the development of research projects related to the connections between child poverty or homelessness and social policies including but not limited to health, child welfare, education, employment, and housing.  Researchers should possess a Ph.D. in an applied discipline such as public policy, economics, or, sociology; have strong analytic and writing skills; and have a demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively. 

Responsibilities include:

  • Analyzing data relevant to public policy and child and family well-being
  • Preparing research reports, fact sheets, and policy briefs
  • Contributing to a research agenda applicable to New York City, New York State, and U.S. poverty policy

Specific types of knowledge or skill required:

  • Ph.D. in applied social science
  • Interest in and knowledge of policies related to the well-being of poor children and families
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with quantitative research methods and with the development and implementation of research projects involving secondary data analysis (knowledge of STATA or SPSS required)
  • Desire and demonstrated ability to contribute to and foster a policy-focused research agenda including identifying pertinent areas of research
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills including the ability to synthesize and communicate complex issues to a variety of audiences

Project Coordinator

The Institute for Children and Poverty is seeking a Project Coordinator who will be responsible for interacting with various policy teams and individual analysts and researchers on projects pertaining to the relationship between child poverty and social policies pertaining to child welfare, education, employment, and housing, among others.  Applicants should possess an advanced degree and at least four years experience in the social sciences. Candidate must have strong analytic and writing skills; and have demonstrated an ability to interact with multiple staff on a number of projects.


Specific requirements:

  • Advanced degree in applied social science
  • Interest in and knowledge of policies related to the well-being of poor children and families
  • Demonstrated familiarity and experience with quantitative research methods
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills including the ability to communicate complex issues to a variety of stakeholders
