INSTRUCTIONS FOR AUTHORS

Manuscripts should be submitted in Microsoft Word and data must be included for every graph submitted. Include one self-addressed, stamped postcard; receipt of manuscripts will be acknowledged within four weeks. Manuscripts will not be returned. Accepted manuscripts are subject to editorial modifications. Submission of a manuscript implies a commitment to publish in the Journal of Children & Poverty.
All manuscripts should be accompanied with a short biography of the author (100 words), and abstract of no more than 200 words, and a cover sheet with the title of the article, author, affiliation, mailing address, phone and fax numbers, and a current e-mail address. If a paper has been prepared for presentation at a meeting, this information should be noted on the manuscript.
Manuscripts are accepted on the understanding that they are original works for publication solely in the Journal of Children & Poverty, and that the manuscripts submitted have not been published nor are they being considered for publication elsewhere.
Style points. (For a detailed editorial style sheet, please contact the Managing Editor.)
Tables, figures and captions to illustrations should be kept to a bare minimum. Tables must be typed on separate sheets and not included as part of the text. The captions to illustrations should be gathered together and typed on a separate sheet. Tables and figures should be numbered by Arabic numerals. The approximate position of tables and figures should be indicated in the paper. Please supply clear copies of artwork (preferably the originals) for figures in a finished format suitable for reproduction. Figures will not normally be redrawn by the publisher. The author(s) must arrange permission for the reproduction of illustrations and tables within articles. Figures may be sent electronically, preferably in either TIFF (tagged image file format) or EPS (encapsulated postscript) formats. However, we can also accept PICT or JPEG formats.
Quotations of less than 40 words should be included in the text with " ", double quotes. Quotations of more than 40 words (display quotations) should be separated from the text by one line space above and below the quotation, and indented.
Within the article, notes should be cited in numerical order with a superscript Arabic number. Notes should be gathered at the end of the article, before the References, and listed with Arabic numbers (not superscript).
References should be cited in the main text of the article by giving author(s) surname(s) and year of publication, in parentheses. The references should be listed in full at the end of the paper (after any Notes), in the following forms:
Books (monographs):
HARVEY, P., T. MARMOR, & J. MASHAW. 1990. America's misunderstood welfare state. New York: Basic Books.
Books (edited volumes):
KAMARCK, E. 1992. Family policy. In Changing America: Blueprints for the new administration, ed. by M. Green, pp. 44356. New York: Newmarket Press.
Journal articles:

Proofs will be sent to authors by airmail/first class mail if there is sufficient time to do so. They must be corrected and returned to the Editor within three days of receipt. Major alterations to the text cannot be accepted.
Early Electronic Offprints. Corresponding authors can now receive their article by e-mail as a complete PDF. This allows the author to print up to 50 copies, free of charge, and disseminate them to colleagues. In many cases this facility will be available up to two weeks prior to publication. Or, alternatively, corresponding authors will receive the traditional 50 offprints. A copy of the journal will be sent by post to all corresponding authors after publication. Additional copies of the journal can be purchased at the author's preferential rate of 15.00/$25.00 per copy.
Copyright. It is a condition of publication that authors assign copyright or license the publication rights in their articles, including abstracts, to Taylor & Francis. This enables us to ensure full copyright protection and to disseminate the article, and of course the Journal, to the widest possible readership in print and electronic formats as appropriate. Authors may, of course, use the article elsewhere after publication without prior permission from Taylor & Francis, provided that acknowledgement is given to the Journal as original source of publication, and that Taylor & Francis is notified so that our records show that its use is properly authorised. Authors retain a number of other rights under the Taylor & Francis rights policies documents. These policies are referred to at http://www.tandf.co.uk/journals/authorrights.pdf for full details. Authors are themselves responsible for obtaining permission to reproduce copyright material from other sources.
