Homeless adults face countless barriers that many of their non-homeless
peers never have to encounter. In light of these barriers, the Adult
Education and Literacy programs address multiple needs at several
levels. As a result, parents build useful skills in a non-judgmental
setting and begin to view learning as a worthwhile and lifelong
process.
Together
In Learning (TIL) helps parents increase their literacy skills through
contextualized learning, while a Parent and Child Together component
promotes education as a shared family activity. By using daily life
examples as opportunities for learning, the program prepares parents to
be their child's first and best teacher while teaching them to create a
literacy-based environment within the home.

Through
a collaboration with the New York City Board of Education, American
Family Inns provide its residents the opportunity to earn a diploma
that can open doors to employment and stability. At the Alternative
High Schools, parents attend classes using computers and interactive
classroom instruction in preparation for the General Equivalency
Diploma (GED) exam. They also receive career counseling and obtain
referrals for job training.
The
Practical Living and Useful Skills (PLUS) workshops include units on
parenting, family violence, stress management, intimate relationships
and sexually transmitted diseases, women's health, and housing. The
workshops are taught as a series, each unit building off of the last
and designed to equip homeless parents with the knowledge they need to
maintain permanent housing.
